How to prevent ingrown hairs

Nothing spoils the look of smooth, freshly waxed skin more than the appearance of ingrown hair.

Ingrown hair occurs when the pore through which a new hair is growing is sealed with a layer of dead skin, trapping the hair beneath the skin surface. You may notice the trap hair beneath the skin (particularly if you have dark hair) or even redness or bumps forming*.

The best way to prevent ingrown hair: exfoliate!

Regular exfoliation will help reduce the build-up of dead skin and minimise the occurrence of those pesky ingrown hairs. Exfoliating is important both before and after waxing for the smoothest results. You may choose a loofah, body scrub or exfoliating glove — the choice is yours!

A day before your wax, gently go over the area you will be waxing. This will also help to remove any dead skin cells and ensure your wax grasps the hair.

Be sure to give your skin some time after waxing before exfoliating to prevent inflammation. Give your skin at least a couple of days post-wax before gently massaging the freshly-waxed area with your exfoliator at least once a week until your next wax.

The best way to treat ingrown hair

If an ingrown hair has formed, gentle exfoliation will help release the trapped hair. If the area has become red and irritated, a topical solution like Nad’s Ingrow Solution with Salicylic Acid will loosen the build up dead skin to allow the new hair to grow through. Ingrow Solution also includes Aloe Vera and Chamomile to soothe irritation and reduce the appearance of redness. Ingrow Solution is also available in a special treatment formula for men with Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera to soothe irritations associated with shaving.

*Ingrown hair should not be confused with folliculitis, an infection of the hair follicle. If you suspect you have an infection, seek medical advice.
